Bryan Tom, Necklace, Thunderbird, Multi Stone, San Felipe, Navajo Handmade, 25in

Ever since the trains arrived in New Mexico entrepreneurial souls have been figuring out how to sell the local Native American art to the visitors. Santo Domingo is located between Santa Fe and Albuquerque and a large part of its economy is based on Native American art. That was even true during the Great Depression. If you can find a Thunderbird necklace from this time period it might be very valuable. Artists would use car batteries for the backings and a variety of other materials to make the colorful necklace. San Felipe and Navajo artist Bryan Tom recreates one of those gorgeous necklaces. Bryan uses real turquoise, coral and shell to make his interpretation of the Thunderbird necklace. However, he does some type of vinyl to inlay his stones on.
