Bertha Tom is Navajo, but is famous for her coil pottery. Her pottery style is typically associated with Acoma, Laguna, Hopi and other Pueblo tribes. Appropriately, the designs she uses are also not traditional for either Pueblos or Navajos: she gets her designs from ancient pottery shards that she finds near her home. The shirt design that she brought in is something like what modern Pueblo potters might call a lightning design, but is inspired by ancient Anasazi designs.
Bertha also does stone inlay and tradional Navajo Rug weaving. See her full interview here: Bertha Tom Interview
