I don't know the inspiration behind this design, but it has been incorporated into Navajo jewelry early on. Many artists draw from their environment and this does closely resemble a common Four Corner's arthropod. Take a hike out into the high desert and push over a rock and there you will find a centipede. This interesting creature is filled with legs and has a long body. Navajo silversmith Aaron Anderson has recreated the centipede in this unique silver and stone belt buckle.
