In the Hopi culture the Kachina lived with the people and would help them make decisions during their migration to the Four Corners. The Kachinas would eventually leave the people here alone to make their own decisions. During ceremonies dancers will dress in Kachina costumes to bring back the spirit of the Kachina to help lead again. You seem to never see a ceremony performed without Mudheads being participants. Many of us think of them as clowns and keeping the crowd entertained, but they play a significant role in Hopi ceremonies. He designs the piece by carving the design into tufa stone that he collects from the Hopi area. Philander beautifully places a piece of blue Kingman as the Mudhead mask for a very distinct look. A wonderful way to show your appreciation of Hopi & Navajo cultures.
