The Spanish introduced the sheep to this part of the world in the 1500s and it has become an important part of Navajo life. It is used for meat and the wool. Every year at the Navajo Nation Fair part of the Queen contest involves the butchering of a sheep. You will also find galleries around the world filled with Navajo wool rugs. Darryl Dean Begay honors the Navajo sheep tradition with this nine piece concho belt. The buckles and conchos each have an original design and two of them are filled with deep blue pieces of Ithaca Peak Turquoise. Don't worry about any of the sheep getting away because the creation includes a herding sheepdog. In 2019 this belt was awarded a Second Place ribbon in its division at the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial.
