Navajo Concho Belt, Unsigned, Number Eight Turquoise, 14 Pcs, Circa 1950s, 47
One of the best things about going through those vintage cases in the Trading Post is the stones you might find. In the first half of the 20th century, when this belt was created, the world was much bigger than it is today. Nowadays, a turquoise dealer in China or Mexico can send an image of new stones to a jeweler in the United States, agree on a deal and the new stone arrives in a couple of days. Seventy years ago a turquoise miner in Nevada would travel hours to remote mine locations, drive back to their shop after a couple of weeks of mining, cut and polish the stones, take the couple week drive selling to the different buyers around the Southwest. One of those great mines that made that journey was Number Eight Turquoise. This has always been a favorite among rock enthusiasts. You will find this circa 1950's Navajo concho belt filled with eleven Number Eight stones, all surrounded by traditional stamp work. The leather has been changed. 398 grams
