The overlay technique has been perfected by the Hopi over the last 90 years, and it is recognized as the Hopi style by many collectors. Hopi silversmith Ruben Saufkie does his overlay a little different. Instead of using two smooth piece of sterling silver plate. He will many times incorporate a tufa cast layer that gives his work an eye-catching texture. Much of his work will incorporate symbols of water that essential for life.
