Billy the Kid is as New Mexico as you get. The Lincoln County Wars have been replayed in movies and have been studied by many historians. Brushy Bill Roberts claimed to have been the real Billy the Kid and many people are convinced he was. It shows that what is written in history books just might not be the truth. Many scholars of the Navajo believe that the first jewelry being made by them was around the mid 1800s. However, some have suggested much earlier from descriptions given by the Territory Governor to his Spanish authority in the early 1800s. New Mexico didn't become a state until 1912, and before that it was really remote and I suspect things could be happening that didn't get an historical account. No matter when the first Navajo silver was made it is alive and thriving today. Navajo artist Herman Smith specializes in those traditional style pieces that are filled with lots of stamp work and great looking stones. He has used a cluster of Sonoran Gold Turquoise for this magnificent cuff.
