Marlena Tom, Pilot Mountain Turquoise, Stamping, Navajo Handmade, 6 3/4"
An exact date is known for the first-time jewelry was made by a Navajo silversmith, but the date is believed to be in the first-half of the 19th century. It is believed a Spanish blacksmith was responsible for teaching the craft to the Navajo. The Spanish has been in the area off and on since the 1500s. Those first pieces would have most likely been all coin silver and maybe not jewelry, but something like a button. Today we see some fascinating creations that we don’t even understand the technique. Navajo silversmith Marlena Tom makes a traditional style of jewelry that uses heavy silver and great looking turquoise stones. This Nevada rock is going to blow you away with the deep blue color and all the matrix. The piece of Pilot Mountain sits surrounded by an explosion of silver design, and has been placed an easy wearing bracelet shank.
