In the late 1800s a Navajo silversmith taught a Zuni artist, Lanyade, the art of jewelry making. It wouldn?t be silver that defined the Zuni silversmith, but instead his mastery of stone. Styles like inlay and small needlepoint have become what the Zuni artists are known for. Plus, they take the time to make small pieces of art that are very different from the large works of the Navajo. Award-winning artists Vincent & Socorro Johnson show the elegant petti point and needlepoint stone work in this incredible belt. They have used a combination of deep red Mediterranean Coral stones and Sleeping Beauty Turquoise to make the classic blue and red cluster. It is amazing how perfect the stone and silver work is, as well as how much design is put into each piece. You will find over 140 cuts in each concho.
