Melvin Francis, Lester James, Concho Belt, Sonoran Gold Turquoise, Navajo,, 45”
Zuni Trader C.G. Wallace played a critical role in developing the Zuni jewelry trade. It was also common practice for him to collaborate Zuni artists with Navajo silversmiths. He saw that Navajo silver work was superior, just like Zuni stone work more advanced than the Navajo during this period. Some names have become famous because of his collection of work that was auctioned in the 1970s. Navajo silversmith Roger Skeet Sr was one of those legendary C.G. Wallace smiths, and Zuni names like Lamber Homer are at the top of collector's lists. Almost one hundred years ago the two collaborated to make a concho belt that would become the cover of the Sotheby's famous 1975 auction of Wallace's collection. Navajo artists Melvin Francis and Lester James have recreated the belt. Using a collection of Sonoran Gold Turquoise inlaid by Lester against a mirror polished sterling silver created by Melvin. Everything sits on a fabulous custom cut piece of genuine leather.
