Zuni artists Nancy & Ruddell Laconsello make gorgeous pieces of inlay art. They make a variety of birds, Zuni figures, animals, and other designs in their signature round pin/pendants. This stunning piece is a fascinating Hummingbird that sits perfectly in the center with blooming flowers all around.
Most things are made from ingredients found at the local silver supply house, but those rare unique pieces are made from scratch. Navajo silversmith Calvin Martinez makes his pieces from scratch, which gives his work a very different feel than wire purchased from Indian Jewelry Supply company.
Calvin Martinez loves to get his hands on silver. He has created so many beautiful things over his jewelry-making career that you don’t really expect to see something new from him. However, he has begun creating these all silver pieces that have an amazing revival look.
Navajo artist Herman Smith made this silver stamped cuff. He has combined traditional flat stamp design with a centered diamond repousse design. Right in the center is an amazing piece of Pilot Mountain Turquoise. This Nevada stone has an eye pleasing combination of blue and green colors that host a golden colored matrix.
I remember the first time I saw an eagle on the Navajo Reservation. It was a massive golden eagle perched at the edge of a high red rock mesa overlooking the vast desert valley. That was the only time I have seen one here in the Four Corners, but the impressive image has stayed with me forever.
Award-winning artist Aaron Anderson specializes in using one of the earliest Navajo jewelry making techniques. He carves his designs from a stone and then pours silver into the carved rock to make his jewelry. Aaron's work is just as magnificent as those early creations.
One colorful painted Navajo Pony stretches across this magnificent tufa cast bracelet. One drive across Highway 491 between Gallup and Shiprock and you would encounter many of these wild and beautiful creatures. You will find turquoise, orange spiny oyster shell, black jet and jasper give the Navajo pony its color.
Navajo artist Kevin Yazzie continues to make pieces of amazing tufa cast art. This huge cuff is another amazing example of why we think of him as such a talented silversmith.
